(HOPEFULLY) HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Mass media teaches us that we should all be happy and joyful during the holidays. After all, what's not to love? It's all about shopping, extravagant gifts, family fun, great food and good times!! But with wisdom and experience, we realize that the holiday season can actually be a time of great sadness and deep reflection - especially for those who've lost loved ones, with financial troubles, or with strained family relationships. Even the holidays themselves are reflections of times that weren't always "merry". I think of the indigenous peoples who lost so much in the early founding of my country. I think of my ancestors who had to try to find some measure of joy in the horrible, unjust circumstances in which they lived. When I think of Christmas, I think of the sacrifices that Christ made for all of our sins...
On a happier note - when I think of the New Year, I think of all the blessings I experienced this past year, and look forward to all that life offers for 2023. I think of all the great interactions I've had with all of you over the past year. I look forward to spending Christmas and Thanksgiving with family and friends, and hope you do as well. Know that it's ok to feel a bit of sadness this time of year, and don't apologize for it! Living in your truth means that you can still enjoy a wonderful holiday season even if you're not living in "holiday greeting card" circumstances. Remember, every day of life is a day to be cherished despite your circumstances. Stay blessed and not stressed this holiday season!
